4 Tips to Improve your Self Esteem
Self-esteem is basically the set of beliefs or values you have about yourself. These beliefs are based on experiences you’ve had and messages you’ve received from others in the world. Sometimes we have gaps in our confidence due to various early experiences. I know I have gaps from not feeling included at school and missing approval from my parents. Whatever the reasons you have for low self-esteem – there are ways to improve it in order to have a better quality of life. Here are 4 tips to help give yourself a boost:
1. Know your triggers – we all have situations where we feel like we are not at our best or places where we consistently feel weaker in life. It’s important to be aware of these situations so that we can be prepared. Knowing where the issues are is the first step in making sure that your self-esteem is not eroding blindly.
2. Forgive yourself – mistakes are a part of life…we just need to learn from them. It is very important to remember that mistakes are natural and ultimately help us move closer to our goals. Having some success and some failures is normal, so when the inevitable happens, forgive yourself, learn from your mistakes and move on. Getting stuck in one place because you haven’t succeeded is not going to get you to where you want to be. Be kind to yourself and treat yourself like you would anyone else for which you have compassion.
3. Focus on the positive – Be sure to celebrate your accomplishments! One way to do this is by writing them down in a journal – no matter how small. I know I sometimes forget to celebrate the small things. However, it is something that you can look back on when you are feeling a little and realize how much you have done.
4. It’s just an image – remember that self-esteem is just an image that we have of ourselves and it can be improved and changed with a little effort. The benefits of improved self-esteem can help in just about every area of life.
