Are you setting the right kind of goals?
We’re almost thru January already and I’m just wondering how are you doing with your goals? I know everyone has New Year’s resolutions and January is a great time to be setting goals but sometimes we don’t set the right type of goal.
What I mean by that is a lot of goals are outcome type goals. If you want to lose 20 pounds, or you want to get to the next rank in your company that is an outcome type goal – but what if you decided to use behaviour based goals.
I know for me that works a lot better. In network marketing company and direct sales they are always telling you to set the next goal – what rank do you want to go to and sometimes just having that written down is not very motivational and it doesn’t really get me going – Plus you don’t have any control over the outcome. But if you can break it down and make your goal the behaviours that you need to achieve that goal it is easier to work on and you have control over the behaviour.
For example – say you want to lose 20 pounds. If you have that as a goal – eh – is that really going to get you going to lose that weight? What if you instead thought about the things that you need to do to lose that weight. Maybe you need to start working out? How much do you need to start working out? How often do you want to start working out? and start making that part of your routine. What are you going to eat? Plan some of your meals. If it’s too overwhelming to plan all of your meals for the day maybe you can just make a tweak on one or two of your meals and start slowly and then once those things become habit then you can start adding on the new things that you need to incorporate into your life to achieve the big goals – to lose the 20 pounds. It’s actually a more practical thing – something that you have control of.
When you set a goal in direct sales or network marketing to go for your next rank that’s great but a lot of what is involved in getting there is out of your control and up to other people. So if you set a goal as a behaviour for your outcome for direct sales or network marketing you are in control. There are many different things that you can work on to help you achieve your goal of reaching the next rank. How many people are you going to contact every day? How many are you going to follow up with? Find some of the practical income generating things that you need to do. That is under your control and that’s something that you can accomplish so you can feel good about getting where you want to go. Eventually it is going to help you go to that next rank – but it something you can do on a daily basis or weekly basis to help you get there and you can feel good about your journey on your way to your goal.
